Final Field Trip

Today author Rob Boley had us point out metaphors in various poems. He then asked us to walk around the park and create as many metaphors as we could. I was able to create nine. I thought it was a unique exercise to help us bond with nature. I was serious with some of my metaphors, but I wanted to make some funny too.

Here is a written version of my metaphors:

  1. The ducks glide through the water as gracefully as stars moving in the sky.

  2. The sound of rocks scraping is like my sister’s voice, annoying.

  3. My life is like a trashcan, a waste.

  4. The natural park next to the factory is like walking the border of good and evil.

  5. The sun is bright like my future.

  6. The rocks are hard to move, like challenges in life are hard to pass.

  7. The sun blinds me, like my friends white sneakers.

  8. The fallen twigs remind me of my broken dreams.

  9. The broken twigs remind me of my broken spine.

I learned that by taking a step closer, you are able to notice more detail. Today we were assigned to complete the small word lesson. Basically we observed a patch of land from regularly. Then we laid down, and noticed all the new details that we weren’t able to see before. At first I saw two types of grass and a small leaf. However, when I laid down I noticed more dirt, more leafs, another kind of grass. This made me wonder what other details in life I haven’t noticed before.

Our group completed the metaphor activity with Rob Boley first, and one of my friends even won a prize. I really want to read one of his books because they look super cool. Then my group tried the small world challenge. This has helped me live more deliberately, because I am able to understand the importance of all of the details, and why I should pay attention to them. Then my group hung some hammocks and we flipped each other. It was hilarious! Then we had lunch, went to the volleyball field, and went back home. We got several of cars to honk at us. It was funny!
